Build your family's Family Compass

A calm, guided conversation for a couple planning a baby, expecting one, or already growing alongside a small child. You will see the family scripts you each grew up with, choose your own values, and turn them into everyday behaviour.

45–90 minutes · you can do it in parts · progress is saved on this device only.

In this family we choose warmth, honesty and respect.

“We argued, but we are still one team.”

Example

An example of the result. This is a demonstration map, not a real family's data.

We talk a lot about what to buy for a child. Far less about what kind of family we want to be.

Every adult brings their own rules, habits and childhood experience into a new family. Some of it overlaps; some only becomes visible in hard moments. Family Compass helps you talk about it without grading each other, and find common ground before the decisions have to be made while you are exhausted.

What you will create

  • 7–10 family values
  • each value translated into observable, everyday behaviour
  • a short family mission in your own words
  • family phrases and agreements
  • a Family Compass Map you can keep and come back to

Who it is for

  • couples planning a baby
  • parents-to-be
  • parents of a newborn or a small child
  • partners who want to agree things before the hard moment rather than during it

When this is not the right thing

Family Compass is not designed for a crisis, for violence or for acute conflict, and it does not replace family therapy.

If there is violence, coercion, fear, severe emotional distress, postpartum depression or a threat to safety in your relationship or your family, please seek qualified professional help. This tool is not designed for crisis situations.

Questions that come up

Is this a test of whether we are “good parents”?
No. There is no score, no ranking and no correct set of values.
Do we have to do it all in one go?
No. Progress is saved on your device, so you can pick the conversation up later.
Do you store our answers?
In the current prototype your answers and progress stay on your device, in your browser's storage, and are never sent to a server.
Can I do it on my own?
The tool is built primarily for two adults. Doing it alone is possible, but the questions and wording assume a conversation between two people.
Is this therapy?
No. It is a tool for reflection and conversation, not diagnosis, treatment, psychotherapy or crisis support.
Current status

Family Compass is a free prototype right now. We are testing whether the process is clear, whether couples finish the conversation and whether the result is useful. It may become paid later, but there is nothing to pay today.
